A Cleaning Team with a Difference

In 2015, Mark Wagenaar (Carey Baptist College Business Manager) had a creative idea to train up a team of refugees in cleaning services at the Carey Harrisdale campus. Shortly the leadership team at Carey gave the all clear and the significant conversations began.

Tony Dower was hired to lead, mentor, train and partner with this newly formed team of people – many of which were limited in their English language and had struggled to earn income.

Fast forward to August 2016 and the Carey Property Cleaning Team have just celebrated their graduation from their Soundway English programme.  After 14 weeks of intensive English training facilitated by Mr Dower, we’re very proud to see 100% group graduate. “The diligence and gratefulness that our Burmese/Karen work colleagues demonstrated throughout their training was moving,” comments Mr Wagenaar. “Even more humbling, is the willingness of fellow staff members to get behind our refugee support initiative.”

Lyn Fryer and the iCentre team have been supporting them to the point where they are now very active community users of the iCentre (College Library) and treat every book they borrow as if it were new found gold.

From here, one of our brilliant Primary Teachers Mr Najjar will be running an Intro to Computers course on Saturday mornings for the group.

What a blessing it is that we are able to help these fantastic individuals.
